KNEE PAIN

The knee is the largest joint in the body. It is a major weight-bearing joint and is one of the most frequently injured joints in the human body.

Knee pain can be debilitating and has a number of different causes. Common symptoms in the knee include pain, stiffness, aching, locking, swelling, limping and difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee.

The knee joint lies between the femur and tibia, in front of which is the patella or kneecap. It is made up of a number of structures including ligaments, muscles, joint capsule, synovial membrane and two ‘c’ shaped pieces of cartilage which sit between the femur and tibia known as the menisci. Osteoarthritis, damage or strain to these knee structures can symptoms but sometimes pain may be referred from the hip joint.

How Osteopathy can help knee pain

Knee pain can be caused by sudden injuries like sports injuries or by repeatedly placing strain on a particular part of the joint. Poor alignment of the knee or kneecap and altered joint mechanics in relation to other joints such as the hips and knees are often significant.

Whilst some conditions may require surgery, at Chapel Place Osteopaths  we find we are able to resolve many knee problems with manual treatment, specific exerecises and lifestyle changes. By using a techniques like soft tissue massage, stretching and joint mobilising, and by ensuring related joints like the hips and ankles are working well we aim to reduce the strains placed on the knee and allow it to heal.

X-rays, scans and other tests are sometimes required to make a diagnosis so we may refer to your GP or a specialist for any additional investigations or treatment.
